Western Progress and Humanity's Regress

Interviewer: What do you think of western civilisation? Mahatma Gandhi: I think it would be a very good idea.22 Introduction In this essay, the notion of ‘Western progress’ refers to the attitude and actions of the West following great turning points in its history, including colonialism, industrialisation and slavery. To define ‘the West’ is an unsurmountable task for which there is much debate; however, for the purposes of this essay we shall take it to mean the historical values and technology of Europe and its influences in the world. We shall be exploring its unrelenting emphasis on economic progress and the derivations of individualistic and imperial values, dating back to Christian and ancient Greek influences. ‘Humanity’s regression’ refers to the rising conflict, instability and unsustainability of the human experience in modern society.
